College Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)

The College of Engineering will host an REU program for UMass College of Engineering students that are conducting research under the direction of engineering faculty and funded through faculty grants. This program is a full-time intensive research experience beginning in early June and ending in August.  In addition to mentored research projects, students have the opportunity to participate in weekly professional development seminars provided by the College, and/or in conjunction with other REU programs on campus. Participants will showcase their research at the end of the program in a public poster session.

Proposed REU Site: Engaging Students in Sustainable Energy Research

Within the COE, the Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, the Institute for Massachusetts Biofuels Research, the Wind Energy Center, and the UMass NSF IGERT: Offshore Wind Energy Engineering, Environmental Impacts, and Policy are confronting one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century- the development of large scale cost effective renewable energy that is environmentally- and socially- acceptable. Current faculty research projects cover a wide range of technologies – including wind and solar energy, building energy efficiency, biofuels, nanoenergy, and microbial fuel cells - involving systemic challenges that require an interdisciplinary approach. The College of Engineering submitted an REU Site proposal to NSF in August 2013 to engage students in our on-going sustainable energy research. We anticipate hearing about funding by the end of February.

If funded, our NSF Site REU projects will combine elements of basic sciences, core engineering disciplines, and quantitative methods and incorporate social, economic, and policy concerns. Students from chemical, civil, computer systems, electrical, industrial, or mechanical engineering, plus biology, chemistry, statistics, and other related disciplines, are encouraged to apply.
