On November 2, Michael Prokle, a doctoral candidate in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, was honored with the 2015 Judith Liebman Award at the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. Prokle was the president of last year's interdisciplinary UMass Amherst INFORMS Student Chapter and is being honored with the national Liebman Award for his work in that capacity.

The first phase of the UMass Amherst 2015–16 Innovation Challenge kicked off its 11th year of competition on October 28, with two teams from our College of Engineering capturing the first- and third-place prizes of $1,000 and $500 respectively.

At the 38th annual Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Supermileage Competition on June 8 and 9, the UMass team scored an impressive fourth place out of 20 collegiate teams by hitting 775 miles per gallon on the 9.6-mile course at the Eaton Proving Grounds in Marshall, Michigan. Rising senior Alex Finestone from Billerica, Massachusetts, enters his final year in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department having already accumulated enough honors as a student/athlete to stagger anyone’s imagination. Think about it. Finestone is the co-captain of the UMass Minuteman Track & Field Team who also carries an outstanding 3.658 GPA in the rigorous mechanical engineering curriculum, has landed on the  Dean’s List five times, and, just for good measure, has been named five times to the Atlantic-10 Athletic Conference Commissioner Honor Roll.

Radhameris (Radha) Gómez, a Ph.D. candidate in the Transportation Engineering group in the UMass Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, was recently awarded the 2015 Ann M. Hershfang Graduate Scholarship by the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) Boston Chapter. The competitive Hershfang Graduate Scholarship is awarded to a woman enrolled in a transportation-related graduate program with plans to pursue a career in the transportation industry.

This summer, senior Anwesh Yerneni of our Chemical Engineering Department completed a highly coveted internship at Tesla, Inc. in Palo Alto, California, in which he worked on several high-profile research projects aimed at improving Tesla’s automotive batteries, the key to the automaker’s groundbreaking electric cars. Yerneni served on Tesla’s Cell Engineering Team doing research based on the company’s own in-house chemical engineering.
