COE Student Gives Informational Seminars in India

Sahil Shanghavi & Lakshmipat Singhania Academy Students

On January 12, Sahil Shanghavi, a senior electrical engineering major at UMass Amherst, hosted an information seminar for 150 students at Lakshmipat Singhania Academy, his former high school in Kolkata (Calcutta), India. Two days later, on January 14, Shanghavi gave a similar seminar at the Bhawanipur Education Society College that was open to students from many high schools throughout the city. The seminars were reported by the Times of India and the Kolkata Mirror. “I have received a lot of great feedback,” Shanghavi said about the events, “and I also met with a lot of students outside of these sessions. Most of the people I was able to meet are still juniors in high school, and I think this is good as we got them thinking about us at the right time.”

Through these events, the college aims to spread awareness about its courses and the benefits and opportunities that an Indian student might have here.

The papers reported that Shanghavi has earned many achievements. He was the governor for an area government at UMass Amherst, a member of the student advisory board for the university honors program, Commonwealth College, the current president of the Eta Kappa Nu Honors Society, and also a representative for the College of Engineering. In addition, he is in the Collegiate Flying Club. During his time at the university, he was also a teaching assistant for a course and has been a resident assistant since his second year.
