Event Panelists

Graduate students and postdocs are invited to the virtual event "Working in a National Lab: A Good Fit for You?" on Thursday, January 13, at noon ET. The event is co-sponsored by the Office of Professional Development and the College of Engineering Career Center.

The event features four University of Massachusetts Amherst alumni, Pubudu Handakumbura, Jessica Lau, Supratim Mukherjee, and Gavin Portwood, with disciplinary expertise in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering management, microbiology, and plant biology. These alumni will lead a 1-hour moderated panel about what it's like to work or intern at one of the 17 National Laboratories across the U.S.

The event's goal is to introduce these labs as a potential career path, as National Labs tackle the critical scientific challenges of our time—from combating climate change to discovering the origins of our universe—and possess unique instruments and facilities. These Labs address large-scale, complex research and development challenges with a multidisciplinary approach that emphasizes translating basic science to innovation.

The panel will be followed by optional opportunities for smaller discussions and networking with panelists.

Pre-registration for "Working in a National Lab" is required.
