Professor Robert W. Hyers of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department has been informed that the Board of Trustees of ASM International (formerly the American Society for Metals) has elected him as a Fellow of the Society. Hyers’ ASM citation reads: "For distinguished contributions in the field of high-temperature materials processing and properties, with proven applications of these technologies in aerospace and extractive industries."
Hyers does research on: high-temperature materials; condition monitoring and prognosis of structures; and physics-based modeling of materials processing and failure. He served as the 2015-2016 Chair of ASM’s Boston Chapter, and continues on ASM Boston’s Executive Committee. At the Society level, he serves ASM International as a member of their Women in Materials Science and Engineering Committee.
As ASM wrote to Hyers, “The honor of Fellow represents recognition of your distinguished contributions in the field of materials science and engineering and develops a broadly based forum for technical and professional leaders to serve as advisors to the Society.” ASM elects about 20 members as Fellow each year from its membership of over 29,000.
This honor will be conferred upon Hyers at the Convocation of Fellows to be held during the ASM Awards Dinner on Tuesday, October 16th, in Columbus, Ohio.
Among Hyers’ many honors is: the Brimacombe Medal, TMS, 2012; a NASA Faculty Fellowship, 2012; the Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award, SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) International, 2008; Professor of the Year, Mechanical Engineering, 2006 and 2005, UMass Amherst. Advisor of the Year, Mechanical Engineering, 2007 and 2004, UMass Amherst; Editors’ Choice for Physics by Science (May 30, 2003, pp.1345-6) for his paper (Phys. Rev. Let. 90, 195504, May 2003); and a NASA Special Service Award, 2000 and 2001.
Hyers earned his S.B. in 1992 and his Ph.D. in 1998 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
