Chemical Engineering undergraduate Zeynep Alptekin ’23 was one of three students at the University of Massachusetts Amherst to win a scholarship from the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.

 

The UMass Amherst Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) selection committee has chosen Assistant Professor Beatriz Lorenzo of the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department as one of eight recipients of the 2022-23 Lilly Fellowship for Teaching Excellence.

Sanjay Raman, dean of the College of Engineering, has been appointed to the Defense Science Board, a federal advisory committee chartered to provide Department of Defense (DOD) leadership with independent advice and recommendations on matters related to strengthening national security.

Associate Professor Chaitra Gopalappa of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department has been approved for the prestigious position of “guest researcher” at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

 

Associate Professor Jessica Schiffman, the interim head of the Chemical Engineering (ChE) Department, was recently honored with a UMass Amherst ADVANCE Mentoring Award. 

 

The startup Sequeschar, led by six mechanical engineering students, will compete on April 13 in the Innovation Challenge finals, where they can receive up to $65,000 in equity-free funding. 

 

Professor Michael Knodler of the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department and Assistant Professor Yubing Sun of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department have been named as outstanding faculty members in the College of Engineering for 2022.

 

Yasra Chandio’s research around the security of Mixed Reality involves hacking into MR systems to uncover and expose key vulnerabilities, with the aim of enhancing user safety. 

 

UMass researchers led by Sanjay Arwade, civil engineering, are collaborating on the National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium’s project to quantify and assess the risk to offshore wind installations of Atlantic coast hurricanes.
