ChE’s Nianqiang Wu Garners Sensor Division Outstanding Achievement Award from Electrochemical Society

Nianqiang “Nick” Wu, the Armstrong-Siadat Endowed Professor in the Chemical Engineering Department, has received the prestigious Sensor Division Outstanding Achievement Award from the Electrochemical Society (ECS). The award was created in 1989 to recognize outstanding achievement in research and/or technical contributions to the field of sensors and to encourage work excellence in the field. 

In face of the COVID-19 pandemic, formal recognition of this honor is tentatively scheduled to take place during the PRiME Meeting in Honolulu in October of 2020. At that time, Wu will be presented with an appropriately worded certificate and discretionary travel assistance. As the Sensor Division Outstanding Achievement Award winner, he is also invited to deliver an oral presentation of 40 minutes in length. 

As ECS Executive Director Christopher Jannuzzi wrote in a congratulatory letter to Wu, “Regarding the impact of COVID-19 on the PRiME meeting, our goal remains to have the PRiME meeting as scheduled in Honolulu. However, given the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are also working to incorporate digital presentations and remote participation into the event…being part of this vital technical meeting and for us having a venue to celebrate your accomplishments.”

Wu joined the ChE department in January of 2020 after spending five years as a professor at West Virginia University, where he held the George B. Berry Endowed Chair Professorship in the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources. 

His research interest lies in electrochemical and optoelectronic materials/devices such as biosensing and photodynamic therapy (precision medicine), photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis, as well as electrochemical energy storage. 

As Wu explains about his Wu Research Group, “Our research aims to gain fundamental understanding of charge transfer and energy transfer in electrochemical and optoelectronic materials and devices. It gives us a unique advantage in developing high-performance materials and devices with the 'material-by-design' strategy.”

Wu’s research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and other funding agencies. He has authored or co-authored about 190 journal articles. His papers were cited about 2,800 times in a single year (2019), and he has achieved a total citation count of more than 21,000 throughout his career with an H-index of 67.

Among many other accomplishments, Professor Wu was identified in the Highly Cited Researchers list (The World's Most Influential Scientific Minds) by Clarivate Analytics (Thomson Reuters) in 2018 and 2019. He is a Fellow of the ECS and the Royal Society of Chemistry. 

Wu earned his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at Zhejiang University in China. (July 2020)
