The STEM Women’s Interdisciplinary Group, containing three College of Engineering Faculty members, has received one of the four new mutual mentoring grants, funded for up to $6,000 a year, by the UMass ADVANCE team. Among other UMass faculty, the STEM Women’s Interdisciplinary Group includes Dr. Caitlyn Butler of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and Dr. Sarah Perry and Dr. Jessica Schiffman of the Chemical Engineering Department.
The Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department’s Supermileage Vehicle Team (SMV) has donated four cases of N95 protective masks to healthcare workers, a donation totaling 480 of the desperately needed masks. According to Robert Laford, the assistant director for Emergency Management and Business Continuity in Environmental Health and Safety and Emergency Management at UMass Amherst, the masks were shared among Cooley Dickinson Hospital, Baystate Hospital, and UMass Medical Center.
The College of Engineering has selected Professor Jonathan P. Rothstein of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department and Assistant Professor Jungwoo Lee of the Chemical Engineering (ChE) Department to receive the college’s outstanding faculty awards for 2020. As determined by a faculty review committee, Rothstein won the Outstanding Senior Faculty Award, while Lee earned the Barbara H. and Joseph I. Goldstein Outstanding Junior Faculty Award.
The UMass News Office reported that engineers from UMass Amherst responded to a request from Baystate Health in Springfield for help in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic by helping to upgrade control cables and power systems for ventilators. Among others, the UMass Amherst team was made up of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department Head Christopher V. Hollot and ECE Senior Lecturer Baird Soules and Lecturer Shira Epstein. Co-principal-investigator (co-PI) Michael Zink and Senior Research Scientist Eric Lyons of the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department were key members of the multi-disciplinary team from UMass Amherst and three other institutions that created the Dynamic Network-Centric Multi-Cloud Platform, or DyNamo, a weather-forecasting device which won two awards at the inaugural SCinet Technology Challenge in November of 2019. Together, researchers from the four collaborating institutions developed a platform to improve weather forecasting and predict severe weather events in real time.
Senior Madeline Scott of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department and senior Elizabeth Voke of the Chemical Engineering (ChE) Department and Commonwealth Honors College were two of the eight “Rising Researchers” from across the UMass campus who were honored in the spring semester for excelling “in research, scholarship and creative activity.”
Sanket Sabnis, a fifth-year doctoral student in Professor Wei Fan’s research group within the Chemical Engineering (ChE) Department, has won the 2020 College of Engineering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award. As Sabnis has said, “I am from Mumbai, India, and I identify as a gay man.” In that context, as ChE Department Head John Klier wrote while nominating Sabnis for the award, “Sanket has made tremendous efforts and impact in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in our department, the college, the university, and beyond.”

An interdisciplinary collaboration among Wei Fan of the Chemical Engineering Department, Principal Investigator Scott Auerbach of the Chemistry Department, and other UMass researchers promises to advance our understanding of zeolite catalyst structure and lead to new materials for clean energy and carbon capture, among other applications.
Professors Qiangfei Xia and Jianhua (Joshua) Yang of the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department have published yet another in a long series of papers in the prestigious family of Nature academic journals, this one in the latest issue of Nature Electronics. In this paper, the two ECE researchers and their research team described their construction and operation of a three-dimensional (3D) circuit composed of eight layers of integrated memristive devices in which the novel structure makes it possible to directly map and implement complex neural networks.
