Tilman Wolf, senior vice provost for academic affairs and professor, department of electrical and computer engineering has received a Distinguished Teaching Award for exemplary teaching at the highest institutional level. This campus-wide honor is the only student-initiated award on campus.

Before the COVID-19 epidemic closed down large events in New England, 10 seniors from the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department participated in the regional conference of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in Hartford, Connecticut (ASME EFx® Hartford). As ASME wrote, the conference was “designed to bring the excitement, community, innovation, and vibrant experience of an ASME E-Fests flagship event to local colleges and universities.”

Research Professor Tammy Haut Donahue of the UMass Amherst Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department has been elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) College of Fellows, comprised of more than 2,000 individuals who have made significant contributions to the medical and biological engineering community in academia, industry, government, and education that have transformed the world.

The Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM) program in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department was recently ranked the fourth best online master’s engineering management degree in the country by the 2020 Best Value Colleges rankings Guide to Online Schools for 121 programs, as published by Optimal.

Unsafe drinking water is responsible for at least 500,000 deaths every year in low- and middle-income countries, where households might use many different sources of water, and family members might therefore contact pathogens from various water supplies. That critical problem was the issue being tackled by Dr. Emily Kumpel of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department when she was selected as a UMass Center for Research on Families (CRF) Research Fellow for 2020-2021.

Professors Jonathan Rothstein and Jungwoo Lee have been selected as outstanding faculty in the College of Engineering in 2020. These selections were made through the hard work of a college-level faculty selection committee.

 

 

As the nation combats the spread of the coronavirus, a team of researchers at UMass Amherst has developed a design, informed by clinical feedback, for protective plastic face shields for health care workers and other front-line responders. The design can be made in seconds, is flat for easy storage, and is light weight for shipping.

Professor Sanjay Raja Arwade of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department is one of seven UMass faculty members from across six departments and five colleges chosen as 2020 Public Engagement Faculty Fellows by the UMass Public Engagement Project (PEP).

 

The College of Engineering and University Advancement welcomes Mary-Knight “MK” Young as the assistant dean for development for the college, effective April 6, 2020. 

 

Associate Professor Jenna Marquard of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department and Associate Professor Jessica Schiffman of the Chemical Engineering (ChE) Department are the 2020 winners of the UMass College of Engineering Outstanding Teaching Award.
