UMTC's Michael Smith Gives Workshops to Physical Plant on Innovative Approaches to Winter Weather Treatment

Michael Smith of the UMass Amherst Transportation Center

Michael Smith

According to the UMass News Office, Michael Smith, a program director and technical training specialist within the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department’s UMass Transportation Center and Baystate Roads, has been working with Physical Plant Landscape and Construction Services staff to introduce the use of salt brine as a roadways anti-icing agent. Smith gave multiple training workshops to the staff as the brine pilot program was set up and the correct equipment was acquired. MassSafe Director Dr. Michael Knodler Jr. says that Smith’s innovative approaches to winter weather treatment provide “safety, environmental, and economic benefits” for the campus and that he actually meets with a number of departments of public works across the state on a daily basis.
