Vouvakis Named Outstanding Teacher

The whole College of Engineering joins in congratulating Assistant Professor Marinos Vouvakis of the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department as the college’s 2010-2011 Outstanding Teacher. Dr. Vouvakis will be recognized with other award winners during the college’s Senior Recognition Celebration, to be held on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at 9:00 a.m. in the Recreation Center. “Professor Vouvakis has a desire to be one of the best teachers in our department,” says ECE Department Head Christopher Hollot. “He has actively studied some of our most accomplished ECE teachers in action, and in similar fashion, has engaged the campus teaching community through his Lilly Fellowship.”

The breadth of courses that Dr. Vouvakis has taught and developed is quite broad, spanning core undergraduate to special topics courses. He recently volunteered to teach two important (and new to him) lower-level courses, Engin 112 and ECE 211.

“I can’t recall a professor volunteering to teach both of these courses,” observes Dr. Hollot. He adds that “Professor Vouvakis is driven to be an outstanding teacher in all aspects that we value in the College of Engineering; from graduate-student mentoring to undergraduate instruction and K-12 outreach. He invests tremendous time and energy and has very high standards. I predict that by his example he will motivate us, collectively, to be better teachers and mentors, while continuing to challenge himself and never resting on laurels.”

Vouvakis earned his B.S. at Democritus University of Thrace, Greece, in 1999, his M.S. at Arizona State University in 2002, and his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 2005. His research interests include applied and computational electromagnetics, EM CAD design, domain decomposition methods, finite element methods, boundary element methods, hybrid techniques, and antenna arrays. He is affiliated with the Antennas and Propagation Laboratory and the Center for Advanced Sensor and Communication Antennas. (March 2011)
