Tilman Wolf

According to the University of Massachusetts Amherst News Office, Dr. Tilman Wolf, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been named senior vice provost for academic affairs by acting provost and senior vice chancellor for academic affairs John McCarthy. The appointment is effective at the beginning of the new academic year. Wolf will assume most of the responsibilities of Betsy Dumont, who has recently taken a position as dean of the School of Natural Sciences at the University of California, Merced.

“Tilman will be the new ‘space czar’ for academic affairs,” said McCarthy. “He will also be working with me in a broad range of areas, with a particular focus on STEM.”

A member of the electrical and computer engineering faculty since 2002, Wolf has engaged in research and teaching in the areas of computer networks, cybersecurity, and embedded systems. He was lead principal investigator on the ChoiceNet project, one of five large  National Science Foundation Future Internet Architecture projects. Since 2014, Wolf has served as associate dean in the College of Engineering, where he was responsible for establishing the new department of biomedical engineering and implementing the new M.S. field degree program in electrical engineering together with Shorelight Education. He has developed programs to train graduate students for teaching roles, especially for the new freshman seminars, through his co-leadership in the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning. He is a recipient of the College of Engineering Outstanding Teacher Award and the Graduate School’s Distinguished Graduate Mentor Award.

“Tilman Wolf is an exceptional researcher as well as a broadly experienced administrator,” added McCarthy. “He has already achieved much in areas like research support, online learning, international collaboration, and graduate education. I am confident that this level of accomplishment will continue and grow as he transitions into my office.”

The Provost’s Office is currently conducting an internal search for another senior vice provost for academic affairs, to fill the position vacated when McCarthy became acting provost. An announcement is expected in the next few weeks. (September 2017)
