MIRSL specialized in the conception, design, and implementation of advanced microwave and millimeter-wave systems for remote sensing of the geophysical environment. The research laboratory in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was founded in 1981 by Professors Robert E. McIntosh and Calvin T. Swift. Originally located in the basement of Marcus Hall, MIRSL relocated to the newly constructed Knowles Engineering Building in 1991. Since its founding, MIRSL has graduated over 100 advanced degree students who now work in industry, academia, and government.
