Graduates will walk across the stage, be congratulated by college leaders and faculty, have their name announced, and receive a university commemorative medal as well as a small gift from the college. Each graduate’s time on stage will be broadcast on large video screens and captured by a professional photographer.

Senior Celebration Reception, College of Engineering
Saturday, May 14, 2022

Engineering Quad / Marston Hall, UMass Amherst (map)
11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., rain or shine

We will be gathering in the engineering quad (rain or shine) by Marston Hall for some refreshments and the opportunity to socialize, take photos, and to introduce faculty, friends, and family. This event will be the most casual and social of the weekend – you may arrive and leave as you please but make sure you are parked in lot 65, 45, 26, 31 while attending. Access to the buildings/bathrooms will be available. We will be on grass, so please bring/change into appropriate footwear.

Guest Information for College of Engineering Senior Celebration:

  • There is no limit to the number of guests each student can bring. Tickets are not required and seating is unreserved. The celebration will be live-streamed and recorded for viewing after the event.
  • Guests are encouraged to park in northern lots 65, 45, 26, 31 if they plan to attend the post-event reception in the Engineering Quad. Guest parking is also available in the Campus Center Parking Garage and in lots adjacent to the Recreation Center and Mullins Center—but these vehicles will need to move immediately following the ceremony.  Lot 64 is reserved for disabled patrons only.
  • Cameras are welcome. Please be courteous to each other and refrain from blocking the aisles. A professional photographer will take photos of graduates walking across the stage, and proofs of these photographs will be emailed within 48 hours of the ceremony along with order forms and information for those wishing to purchase prints. After the ceremony, families may quickly use the banners and stage for photo ops.
  • Please dress comfortably. The Recreation Center is air-conditioned; however, it does get warm.  Students must arrive in their caps and gowns. Shoes should be appropriate for walking, standing, and climbing stairs. Please note the post-event outdoor reception in the quad will be in a grassy area, rain or shine.
  • There will be food available. The Courtside Cafe inside the Recreation Center will be open, serving grab-n-go sandwiches, wraps, salads, and a variety of beverages.
  • There is no bad view, or perfect seat. Seats in this venue are all located on a single floor. Graduating seniors will enter the back of the room and be seated up front in the reserved area.  Each entering department will carry a banner during the processional.  You will be able to see your graduate cross the stage on the ”jumbotron” screen.
  • Reserved seating for guests with limited mobility will be available; arrive early to secure. Elevator access is available in the Recreation Center. Please note that guests needing wheelchairs must make arrangements to bring their own; wheelchairs are not provided. Because seats in this venue are all located on a single floor, guests who use a wheelchair, walker or another assistive device often prefer to sit with family members rather than in the designated area. As a courtesy, please email if you know you will need seating in this reserved section so that we can plan accordingly.  Lot 64, located adjacent to the Recreation Center, will be reserved for disabled patrons only.
  • For guests that require the services of an interpreter, please contact Disability Services by April 19. The celebration will be shown on large screens in the event venue and live captioned. Sign language or oral interpreters are available upon request. Call (Voice/TTY: 413-545-0892) or send an email to using the subject line “Commencement Interpreter Request." The deadline for requesting interpreter services is April 19, 2022.
  • The University of Massachusetts Amherst looks forward to celebrating the graduates of the Class of 2022 and welcoming their friends and families to campus. As cases of COVID-19 are increasing in Massachusetts and nationally, we know that our commencement events draw thousands from all over. To protect yourself and others, we strongly encourage all graduates and guests to wear a face covering when attending any indoor commencement events, regardless of vaccination status.
