Powering up Wearable Electronics Through Moisture in Your Skin

A team of UMass researchers has engineered a biofilm that harvests the energy in evaporation and converts it to electricity. The secret behind this new biofilm is that it can make energy from the moisture on your skin. This biofilm was announced in Nature Communications in a paper written by lead author Xiaomeng Liu, a graduate student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department, and by senior authors Jun Yao of ECE and Distinguished Professor of Microbiology Derek Lovley.
