Schaubert Scholarship Fund Set up for ECE Students

Fellow colleagues, staff, and former and current students of retiring Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Professor Daniel Schaubert have initiated a new scholarship fund that will not only support the economic needs of our students, but will also recognize the lasting contributions he has made over the last 27 years to the university and his field. The Daniel Schaubert Scholarship Fund will benefit ECE students in his area of expertise – antenna design – as the director of the internationally renowned Center for Advanced Sensor and Communication Antennas (CASCA).

Professor Schaubert helped establish the ECE department’s national reputation in antenna design, and he also created and directed CASCA as a major center for advancing and strengthening high-tech industries in our region and across Massachusetts. Professor Schaubert served as ECE department head from 1994 to 1998. For many years he organized and chaired the annual Antenna Applications Symposia held at the Retreat Center in Robert Allerton Park, a century-old Georgian mansion just outside of Monticello, Illinois. Professor Schaubert is a Fellow of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE), and in 2008 received the John Kraus Antenna Award from the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society for “contributions to the development of the Vivaldi antenna and arrays."

He has also received the H. A. Wheeler Prize Applications Paper Award, the IEEE Third Millennium Medal, the University of Massachusetts Samuel F. Conti Scholarship Award, the College of Engineering Senior Faculty Award, and the Eta Kappa Nu Outstanding Teaching Award.

The Daniel Schaubert Scholarship Fund is a fitting honor for a much admired and respected faculty member and a lasting investment in the many students who will follow in his footsteps – our future engineering leaders. If you would like to make a gift to the Schaubert Scholarship please visit and select the College of Engineering and "Daniel Schaubert Scholarship Fund" under giving allocations. (March 2010)
